Welcome to our first feature interview on smoothdevil!!

We are excited to be talking to smoothdevil member Liam Garvo.

Liam is a freelance Director / Producer and has been involved in some interesting projects. We'll be asking Liam some questions which will give us an insight into his approach and a wee bit about him generally. Righto...

SD: Thanks for joining us Liam :) Tell us a bit about how you came to be doing what you are doing?
LG: Well I haven’t been working in film that long. I started out back in Feb when I directed my first piece. It was for a competition held by Penguin Books to come up with a trailer for their new book ‘The Missing’. My entry went on to win which was cool and was shown before Spiderman 3 at the Leicester Square Odeon in London for a week. Ever since then I’ve sort of had the ‘bug’ as it were.
SD: What suggestions can you make to up-and-coming Directors who are wanting to take their careers to the next level?
LG: I like to try and look at each project as if it were the first one. It’s a way for me to avoid being complacent with my work.
SD: Your work is beautifully shot - tell us a bit about the idea for the music video "Ofelia".
LG: Thanks. A lot of the way it looks is down to Ciro Candia, the DP. He’s fantastic to work with and has an amazing eye for composition.
The idea for Ofelia started out as a pitch as part of the BBC New Music Shorts competition. I was short listed to the final few but unfortunately wasn’t given the commission. However, that didn’t stop me from going ahead and shooting it anyway as I thought it would be a great piece.
The idea for the video itself came from some of the lyrics in the song and kind of grew from there. From the beginning I knew I wanted it to have a strong fairy tale atmosphere about it and I wanted to keep it quite dark and slightly sinister. I loved Pan’s Labyrinth and wanted to create something as delicate and beautiful as Del Toros’ film. In fact the name Ofelia comes from the childs name in the film. I guess ultimately the piece is about loss and isolation.

SD: You seem to have a penchant for moody, dark pieces. Where does your inspiration come from?
LG: I’m not really sure. Those sort of pieces just feel more natural to me. I would dread to think what a comedy would be like if I were to direct it! Terrible I would suspect.
SD: Who would you most like to work with & why?
LG: That’s difficult as I would like to work so many different people. Although I can’t wait to work with Ciro again on my next project. His ability to frame and capture scenes adds depth to those subtle and delicate moments.
SD: What excites you most about where the film industry is heading?
LG: I think it’s a lot easier to distribute your own work these days using the internet. With all the social networking sites around it’s easy to put your stuff online and share it with others. I think it raises the standard at which other films, promos, etc are made as there are a lot of creative people out there with some really interesting ideas.
SD: What is your favourite film you have seen recently? (either one you did or someone else...)
LG: That would be Zodiac. I didn’t catch it at the cinema but saw it on DVD the other day and thought it was great. Finchers’ story telling is superb. I love the dark and gritty worlds that he creates and Zodiac was a brilliant example of that.
SD: What exciting upcoming projects are you working on?
LG: I’m currently in pre-production on a few things at the moment but the most exciting is the feature which will be shot the end of next year. It’s this sort of cross between Remains of the Day and Bladerunner. I’m really looking forward to that.
SD:

Sounds amazing - keep us posted. Thanks again for joining us and we look foward to seeing what you come up with in the future.
